“Do we really have to go back to real life?” - Words I uttered to Sam this morning before I drove back to Addison to go to work today… From Austin. You could say work wasn’t the most enjoyable today.
I made this face a lot today.
ACL was a blast, a blast I had to share with 65,000,000 other people, but a blast none the less. At least we got kick ass parking thanks to Sam’s company allowing us to use the vendor parking pass at the park.
My favorite show during the entire festival? Honestly, I’d have to say Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings totally took me by surprise. Sam said I’d like them, and I totally trust her and her musical tastes, but I had no idea I’d like them so much. They reminded me of the final concert scene in Blues Brothers: goofy horn section, tall quirky guitar player (although he was a goofy looking Italian, not black) and the “sidekick guy” who warmed up the crowd for two songs before Sharon Jones eventually made her way out. The Dap-Kings played for Amy Whinehouse, and although she is a coked out whore, I love most of her music because of the great band backing her.
Another surprise of the festival would be the Fleet Foxes. They kept saying they weren’t a “festival band,” but they played the crowd very well and kept the mood light even though it was 12:30 and most of the crowd was still sleepy/hungover.
“I wish we were playing on the WaMu stage so we could tell jokes the whole time.”
“These people in the VIP are from JP Morgan.”
“Thanks to the Foo Fighters for letting us open for them… They have a lot of opening bands… It’s a long show.”
Neko Case played an excellent set, as well. She seemed shy for the most part, but I’m pretty sure 2 and a half years of straight touring takes it out of everyone. During the hour set, Sam spent half of it sleeping against me. Her verdict?

“She’s real good sleepy time music.”
I was happy to see Neko Case, her music will always make me thing of the time I went rode out to Duchesne with Heather, Jon, Leta and Chuck and none of us ended up killing each other even though were 10 plus people in a cabin the whole weekend.
Let me rephrase that, 10 plus people from my family.
It was my first time seeing Beck live, and it was a great experience. Dancing like idiots to “Where It’s At” was a good time, especially when I would get up in an unsuspecting girl’s face and dance on her as she walked by.
Jamie Lidell’s voice is even more amazing live, especially considering he looks like a gigantic pale dork who just got off a double shift on the grill at T.G.I. Friday’s.
Hey, MGMT. Ever heard of stage presence? You would have been one thousand times more entertaining if you didn’t look like a bunch of awkward teenage girls on stage,. I’m sure nerves were a part of it, I’m not saying they didn’t get the crowd pumped, I was just left wanting more.
Most of all, I’m happy I got to see the Foo Fighters for the last possible time in the near future. They played a similar set to the one when I saw them in January, and it was just as awesome. We were near the back of the crowd so we could sit down on the lawn and enjoy it. You could see the stars and there was even a cool breeze, conditions were perfect to hear Dave Grohl growling for 70,000 people.
And one of my favorite persons was sitting right next to me to go along for the ride.
You could say I had a good weekend.

Fleeeeeeet Foxes. So good. Glad to see you guys stayed hydrated and no one “fell asleep” with their eyes open. Also: I like the flowers in Sam’s hair. She looks like she smells a lot better than you do.

Foo Fighters were by far my favorite of the whole weekend, especially with all 97 encores they did…followed closely by john fogerty, old 97s, gnarles barkley and drive by truckers…
