I am now down to 27% body fat. Down a total of about 5.5 percentage points since last September. Not bad.
Someone asked about my diet, so I’ll go ahead and give you a run down…
Cocaine and wiener… Not really, that’s the Paris Hilton diet. And that phrase was stolen from a friend of mine, definitely one of the funniest things I have ever heard come from her mouth. Whoever says wiener is good in my book.
Within the last month I changed my diet around. I used to wake up and not eat anything really, maybe a diet Lipton green tea, but nothing solid. I’m still not really eating any type of real breakfast food, but am now actually intaking calories. Whenever I wake up for the day (anytime from 7am-12pm. Yep, I’m in college still.) I start off with a Slim-Fast. Not in the can, I use the mix. Instead of 8oz I do go with 12oz though, and also a scoop and a half of the mix. I also mix it in the blender, just tastes better that way.
On Tues and Thurs I have an 8:30am class that lasts until 9:45am. After that I head over to the gym and workout for about an hour and a half. When I’m done I’ll eat a high protein/fiber (kashi makes some decent ones, along with Kellogg’s All-Bran) snack bar thing. Then I head back to school, on Thursdays I’m done at 2:15 and Tuesdays at 5 FREAKING 20. Yea, it blows. I usually don’t eat anything else unless I am starving and buy some pretzels from the vending machine. I don’t have anything big until I get home from school. Usually chicken, pork or some type of fish is involved. I try to keep the red meats to a minimum. Even though my mom buys steaks all the time… From Costco. Other than the red meat I don’t really avoid anything else. Carbs are a big part of my diet still, I love pastas and rice, plus they provide good energy. Another thing I eat a lot would be eggs. Sometimes I’ll eat four in a day. Yep, four.
One big part of my diet change that has allowed me to lose weight while still eating the things I love would be portion size. I don’t eat as much. Oh, and the sweets? I try to avoid those all the time. My mom is a big baker, and will often call me and ask if she wants me to save her any brownies/cake etc. I always say no. Not that I would be that tempted if they were around, I just don’t want them around as an option at all. Because a cookie always sounds good before bed, right? Right.
My friend Coleen made a remark last night that pretty much sums up my will power, “I would have got you some candy or something… But you wouldn’t eat it anyway.”
So, keys to my weight loss are working out and eating less. Pretty simple really. Oh yea, I still don’t do any real cardio workout. Because cardio still sucks.

Congrats on the changes that you are making for yourself!! It’s an incredibly huge step to be so committed and to work so hard. I am happy that you are seeing such results. You deserve it!
I did want to mention that perhaps you aren’t eating enough throughout the day. As strange as that may sound, you need to be eating 5-6 smalls meals a day, not have huge chunks of time (like all day during school) where you don’t eat anything. Your body needs to be constantly fueled in order to burn fat. If you aren’t feeding yourself, you’re body assumes it’s starving, and everything, regardless of how clean it is, gets stored as fat. You also may be experiencing huge rollercoaster spikes in your energy levels. If you eat small, frequent meals, you are much more likely to have energy throughout the day, and you’ll work out better too.
The small meals can be a protein shake, crackers and cheese, yogurt and nuts, a protein bar, a small container of tuna… about 150-300 calories and approximately 20-30g protein, 10-20g fat, and the rest carbs.
Just wanted to pass that tidbit of info along. I hope it helps.
Cheers,
Lisa

I agree with Lisa - ’small and often’ meals trigger the body’s constant metabolism i.e. you’re always burning off calories. Energy levels are also much better controlled.
There’s also significant evidence that doing intense cardio actually helps you STORE fat because the body starts to burn muscle as fuel instead of the fat…resistance workouts force the body to burn fuel for the muscles to work out. BUT cardio is still important to keep your heart healthy and also for lung capacity.
You’re doing fab though G, really happy for you!! When all this craziness with buying and moving house is done I’m starting my weight loss and get fit plan. I hope I do as well as you have

I’m going to 2nd what Lisa said…-Remember I told you that you had to eat breakfast!!-bunches of small healthy meals are best. Stock up on protein bars, cheese sticks, almonds, fruit etc, I think if you told a doctor or a nutritionist how you were eating right now they would give the same advice.
Throw them in you bag so you can have a healthy snack and keep fuelling the fire.
and cardio is good for your heart and lung etc, jump on the elliptical for 20 minutes at a medium pace and sweat it out!
You’ve down awesome I’m not knocking that but you need to eat some more so you dont make yourself sick!

No mention of fruit or vegetables?

I hate to break it to you, but pork is a red meat. No matter what the American Pork Council would like you to believe, your body processes pork in the same way it does beef.

Bacon is still way delicious, though.

Hey Congrats!! I know how good it feels to lose weight… Tip? Try switching your day around, dont give up your carbs but have them during the day and at night have whatever protein(wven if its Costco steaks lol) and a variation of veggies (fresh, steamed, raw)
Good luck and keep going!
