I’m staying at the Cambridge Suites, and really, I have no business being here. I opened the bathroom closet in my hotel room and found two robes! There is also a good chance I’m naked under there. And no, I’m not wearing both robes.
It’s really cold here. Like. REALLY. COLD. I don’t even know if I have testicles anymore it’s so damn cold. I got in 2:30ish local time and made it through customs quickly. My cabdriver was awesome. Definitely foreign. And definitely kept swearing at the traffic. It’s weird driving down the highway and seeing everything in kilometers and not miles. Also, I think Toronto drivers are worse than Utah drivers, which is pretty damn bad.
I went to a local pizza place just now, Mamma’s Pizza. Actually pretty good for a chain. They do thin style crust which is usually not my choice, but it’s actually pretty good there. I got the special Potato Pizza: pesto sauce, sliced potatoes, spinach, black olives, and two kinds of cheeses. Better than I thought it’d be. I wanted to try something weird since I’m in a foreign country and it worked out well.
Walking home from the pizzeria it started snowing. Not like normal snow. Movie snow. Slow falling and just a few flakes here and there. It felt like Christmas for the first time this year, and sadly, I had no one to share that moment with.
Except for the hooker in the elevator.

Dude, I went to SLC for the first time last weekend, well, Park City actually. But I gotta say, the whole area was pretty sweet. When I flew in the ground was reddish brown and when I flew out 2 days later it was all white. People sound funny in Utah, but they sure are nice. That’s my first impression anyway.

And they’ve usually had the emotion screwed out of them, so it’s clearly pointless trying to relate the whole christmas nostalgia thing.
Better to just stick with the business at hand.

Did you eat the snow? Like Homer when he was an astronaut? I fantasize doing that, if it was to ever snow here in Australia…

Hey, before you leave try some poutine*, ketchup chips, Pizza Pizza, and a Kinder egg.
* pronounced poo teen. French fries, cheese and gravy.
And for this is actually the first week it’s snowed, so you have great timing!

the US doesn’t have Kinder Eggs??
This really blows my mind.

Canada foreign? I grew up in Ontario, and could see Michigan from my livingroom - never thought we would be classed as foreigners, but I guess we are.
And you totally have to try Tim Hortons coffee.

I’m vouching for the poutine. That is some goooood stuff. Especially after you’ve thrown back a bunch Labatt or Molsen Canadien. Some people are thrown off by the cheese curd aspect, but don’t let them dissuade you.

Mmmm, poutine. I’ll vouch for it too!
No ketchup chips in the US? I had no idea. That’s horrible!
And you think Toronto is cold? Head a few provinces west and come visit Saskatchewan. It’s only minus 11 right now, but last week it was -20’s and felt like -30’s with the wind.
BTW, love your blog. Found it a while back thru dooce and you totally crack me up. Thanks for the laughs.

Dude, Toronto is like…the warmest place in Canada. It’s in Southern Ontario! It was only -15 tonight. But that’s cute. If you want cold, go to Saskatoon, Edmonton, the territories, or the brutal, hellish ‘Winterpeg’. THAT is cold, ugh.
I did almost die walking through Yorkville tonight, though…Toronto is no California, especially when the windchill kicks in.
And yes, poutine is the essence of our country…you must find it, and enjoy. And also Tim Hortons. It’s our national pastime.

Seconding the “you must go to Tim Horton’s” and the try poutine, too. Just not the Burger King kind because it’s all kinds of wrong. There is an amazing guy who makes amazing poutine in his chip truck that is always parked on Front St., just across from the CBC building. (Right before you hit Front and John.) He’s a bit of an out-there guy in that he sings heavy metal songs non-stop but he makes awesome poutine.

the us does have ketchup chips & tim hortons btw
also, i thought kinder eggs were a europe thing, not a canada thing, huh. either way, i could order them on the internet. they’re awesome. once i got a pink plastic rat with a green “real hair” moustache. that thing is weird.
i don’t know what pizza pizza is though, except that it reminds me of little ceasars and really makes me want stuffed crust.
anyway yes you must eat poutine for the greater good, or at least bring me back some damn cheese curds and just try not to eat them all on the way home.
